Why Soshanguve?
A few months ago, 121 came into contact with a group of NGO's based in Soshanguve that were in need of capacity building. We trained about twenty of these NGO leaders in skills such as project management, resource development, marketing and so on.
We thought it was a great effort, but afterwards a couple of guys that we trained suggested that the training didn't meet the mark, both in its content and style. As much as they appreciated our efforts, they suggested we first get a better understanding of the needs of these NGO's, before launching into a training program, and second, get a better understanding of the cultural gap between the trainers and trainees in order to bring content over more effectively.
This made a lot of sense and we decided to put together a strategy for our further involvement in Soshanguve. The strategy would involve partnering with some of the youth workers in the area, finding out real needs and becoming more culturally sensitive.
